How do we know about the whales this year?
Each individual blue whale is photo-identified by its pattern of spots on the side of its body and the shape of its dorsal fin or by its pattern of spots and shape of its tail fin, and is assigned an ID number for their subsequent identification. This female was seen for the first time in 2005, and she was not a calf that year. She has had a calf in 2007, 2010 and 2015, so it is considered a sexual and physically mature female that could be more than 20 years old in this year (2020) that was photographed, unfortunately this year she was not seen with a calf, but it is very likely that it will have more offspring.
One of the registered whales with unknown sex, said individual was observed as a calf with his mother in 2009, so his exact age is 11 years. The necessary samples still need to be taken this season to carry out the corresponding studies and to be able to determine their sex.
It is a female that raises the tail a lot and thanks to this it is possible to see that half of its right lobe is mutilated, in addition, if the left side of the peduncle is observed it is possible to notice the marks from orca bites.
